Detectives from the Fairfax County Police Department’s Major Crimes Bureau have arrested a suspect following a burglary in Fair Oaks and are investigating his possible connection to a robbery that occurred earlier the same day in Tysons.
According to police, on July 23 at 9:07 a.m., officers responded to the 8600 block of Westwood Center Drive in Tysons after receiving a report of a robbery. The victim said she was approached by a masked individual carrying a rifle while walking in a parking garage. The suspect allegedly grabbed her and took her phone before fleeing. Officers searched the area but did not locate the suspect.
Shortly after, at 9:25 a.m., the victim’s boyfriend received an alert from his home security system while still at the scene of the robbery. He observed someone breaking into his residence on Plateau Drive in Fair Oaks through his security camera. Officers responded and confirmed that the house had been burglarized, with high-value Pokemon cards among the stolen items. The suspect had left before police arrived.
Detectives identified Mohammad Asif, 36, of California as the burglary suspect. With assistance from the Fugitive Tracking and Apprehension Unit, officers found Asif at another nearby residence and arrested him.
Asif was taken to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where he was charged with Burglary, two counts of Grand Larceny, Conspiracy to Commit Robbery, and Conspiracy Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony. He is being held without bond.
Police believe both incidents are related but continue to investigate who committed the robbery. “This incident does not appear to be a random act,” according to detectives.
