Best Buddies International has recognized the chapters at Glasgow Middle School and Bonnie Brae Elementary School as the Outstanding Chapter of the Year for middle and elementary schools in Virginia and Washington, D.C. This accolade marks a significant achievement for both schools, which are hosting chapters for the first time.
“Our staff has been thoroughly impressed with the incredible work you all have done in your chapter, the school community, and beyond. From your staff and student leadership, member involvement, and engaging events, [your school] has embodied what Best Buddies stands for — inclusion for all,” stated announcements to each group.
Best Buddies is an organization that fosters friendships between individuals with and without disabilities through shared activities. At Glasgow Middle School, students participated in gingerbread house decorating, friendship bracelet making, and playing Pictionary. “My favorite thing about Best Buddies is that we have fun a lot,” said Brisa. Another member, Jack, enjoys playing games.
“Best Buddies has provided a space for all students to feel included,” commented Sofie Dalton, a special education teacher at Glasgow. She noted an increase in after-school participation among students with disabilities due to the program’s inclusive environment.
At Bonnie Brae Elementary School, Special Education Teacher Alexis McCormick collaborated with Assistant Principal Melissa Johnson to establish their chapter. Principal Morgan Birge remarked on their recognition: “It is incredible — although not surprising based on their passion and hard work — that Bonnie Brae was named Chapter of the Year.”
Bonnie Brae’s activities included a friendship walk, ice cream social, holiday card creation for a local nursing home, participation in a Feet Meet event, and running a weekly sips and snack cart. Joey from Bonnie Brae expressed his enjoyment: “Best Buddies is very fun. I loved doing the Friday snack cart and helping other students.” Carter added that it helped him become “a helpful, kind person.”
Additionally honored were Joshua Hyams from Langley High School as Leader of the Year and Michelle Small from Vienna Elementary School as Outstanding Advisor of the Year (elementary).
