Driver charged after fatal pedestrian collision in Springfield

Detectives from the Fairfax County Police Department’s Crash Reconstruction Unit have charged a driver in connection with a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred on August 15 in Springfield. According to police, Brandon Bui, 24, of Springfield was traveling northbound on Hunter Village Drive when he struck Jay Kim, 76, who was crossing the road within a marked crosswalk. Kim was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died. Bui was not injured and remained at the scene.

Bui has been charged with Failure to Stop for Pedestrians in a Crosswalk. He was served a summons and released.

Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact their Crash Reconstruction Unit at 703-280-0543. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through Crime Solvers by phone at (703) 246-4676 or online. The ‘P3 Tips’ App is also available for submitting tips; anonymous tipsters may be eligible for cash rewards. Those wishing for detective follow-up should leave contact information.

Victim specialists from the Major Crimes Bureau’s Victim Services Division have been assigned to support the victim’s family.

Alcohol and speed do not appear to be factors in the crash, but detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The department encourages residents to register their cameras with Connect Fairfax County to assist law enforcement efforts in solving crimes and supporting investigations.
