Three award-winning students from Edison Academy met with Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid on May 18 to talk about their experiences in technical trades and how these skills are shaping their career paths. The conversation took place as part of the ‘Our Voices, Our Future’ series.

The discussion highlighted the importance of hands-on learning and dedication for students interested in technical fields. “You have to show hard work, consistency, and discipline,” one student said during the meeting.

Edison Academy offers programs that help bridge the gap between high school education and professional careers. The students recently participated in SkillsUSA competitions in areas such as HVAC (heating and cooling systems), Career Pathways (which focuses on turning technical skills into a career plan), and Internetworking (building and managing computer networks).

Mohammad placed at the state level in Program Design, HVAC, and T-Shirt Design categories. He told Dr. Reid that his interest began with photography before expanding into other areas of study. Ceaser and Sam joined him as state champions after winning gold medals in Career Pathways and Internetworking.

These students are already preparing for their futures by pursuing degrees in cybersecurity or joining unions like Steamfitters Local 602. Dr. Reid said, “I think it’s so important that you’re ready for the real world … We certainly need HVAC techs and we need network specialists… The future is really bright.”

Their achievements reflect a growing trend toward technical education as a pathway to successful careers.
