Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has announced adjustments to the school calendar due to the observance of Eid al-Adha, which will now begin at sundown on Thursday, June 5. The changes include an evening-only observance day on June 5 and a full observance day on June 6. FCPS acknowledges that some events like graduations cannot be rescheduled but assures that students observing the holiday can make up missed work afterward.
The Fairfax County Police Department is installing new speed cameras in ten additional school zones. A warning period starts July 2 for three locations and August 18 for seven more, with citations beginning later.
As the school year ends on June 11, FCPS reminds parents to return library books and laptops, settle accounts, and collect medications from schools. Preparations are also underway for summer programs and services, including free virtual mental health consultations from June 23 through August 1.
In other news, Robinson Secondary School celebrated its graduation ceremony recently. Additionally, students were recognized at the Cappies Gala for excellence in high school theater. Colt Armstrong from Falls Church High School won a lead actor award and plans to study vocal performance at Carnegie Mellon University.
The community is invited to attend a boundary review meeting on June 6 at Glasgow Middle School. FCPS is also preparing to launch a new volunteer management system next year.
Parents are reminded about required immunizations for students entering grades seven and twelve. Meanwhile, the Fairfax County Public Library encourages summer reading participation starting June 11.
Applications are open for community members interested in joining the Facilities Planning Advisory Council of the Fairfax County School Board.
