Eighty students from Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) have been named as candidates for the 2026 U.S. Presidential Scholars program. These students represent more than 38 percent of Virginia’s total candidates and are among a group of 5,000 students selected nationwide.
“This recognition reflects not only the extraordinary accomplishments of these students, but also the power and promise of public education,” an FCPS statement said. “Across Fairfax County, our public schools provide students with access to rigorous academics, innovative programs, and dedicated educators who help them discover their strengths and reach their full potential. These 80 students exemplify what is possible when talent, hard work, and opportunity come together.”
The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars chooses scholars each year based on academic success, artistic or technical excellence, essays, school evaluations and transcripts, as well as evidence of community service and leadership. The commission selects up to 161 U.S. Presidential Scholars annually. The announcement of this year’s scholars is expected in late spring or summer.
To qualify for the award, more than 5,000 high school seniors across the country demonstrated outstanding performance on standardized tests such as the SAT or ACT or were nominated by Chief State School Officers or other partner organizations including the National Foundation for the Advancement of Artists’ YoungArts competition.
According to guidelines set by Presidential Executive Order, U.S. Presidential Scholars include one young man and one young woman from each state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico; U.S. families living abroad; along with additional at-large scholars; those recognized in the arts; and those honored for career and technical education achievements.
