On Saturday, Fairfax County district stations collaborated with the Drug Enforcement Administration and other local agencies to collect nearly 1,000 pounds of expired medications and prescription drugs. This was part of the 28th Annual National Drug Take Back Day.
The initiative, held bi-annually, addresses safety and public health concerns. Unused or expired prescription and over-the-counter medications pose risks of misuse, accidental poisonings, and potential overdoses.
If residents missed the event, they can still dispose of medications at year-round drug take-back boxes located at each district station. Items accepted include prescription medications (Schedule II-V controlled and non-controlled), prescription ointments, over-the-counter medications, and pet medications.
However, “We are unable to accept needles (sharps), liquids of any kind, illegal drugs, non-prescription ointments and lotions, aerosol cans, or inhalers.”
For more information on year-round disposal, residents are encouraged to visit the Fairfax County Health Department’s website. The district stations remain open to the public, and further details are available on their respective web pages.
