Since February 2000, the Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) has integrated Crime Analysts into its operations to transform data into actionable intelligence. The role of these analysts has become crucial in modern policing. Currently, FCPD employs 16 Crime Analysts; eight are stationed at district locations and the remaining eight work with specialized units.
Crime Analysts undergo extensive training. They must possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with courses in statistics or research methodology. After being hired, they receive hands-on training by shadowing experienced analysts and mastering FCPD’s Records Management System and analytics software to create reports and visualizations.
The daily tasks of Crime Analysts include reviewing police reports to spot emerging trends, analyzing phone records for ongoing investigations, examining regional bulletins for case connections, preparing commanders for weekly crime meetings with the Chief of Police, creating maps and data visualizations to depict crime patterns, collaborating with officers and detectives on cases to reduce crime, sharing intelligence with neighboring jurisdictions’ analysts, and responding to community inquiries using data-driven insights.
The importance of Crime Analysts lies in their ability to convert complex information into clear insights that guide patrol officers in enforcement strategies aimed at preventing crime while assisting detectives in solving cases. By linking incidents together, they help manage large volumes of data contributing significantly to community safety in Fairfax County.
