As Police Week 2025 concludes, the Fairfax County community takes a moment to honor the officers and K9 partners who sacrificed their lives in service. Each name on the memorial list represents a story of dedication and bravery.
The fallen officers include Police Officer Karen Jean Bassford, Special Officer Hendrick “Sandy” Gideonse, Captain Tommy F. Bernal, Detective Vicky O. Armel, Master Police Officer Michael “Gabby” Garbarino, and Second Lieutenant Francis “Frank” Stecco. Their contributions are remembered for their courage and commitment to duty.
K9 partners such as K9 Bandit and K9 Doby are also commemorated for their loyalty and service in protecting the community.
National Police Week is observed every May to recognize law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. Established by President John F. Kennedy in 1962, it serves as a time for remembrance and appreciation for those who have served and continue to serve.
During this week, the Fairfax County Police Department held various events to honor these heroes. These included a National Police Week 5K run, a K9 Memorial Service, participation in the Police Unity Tour & Law Enforcement United Ride, and hosting the 37th Annual Candlelight Vigil where Chief Kevin Davis read names of fallen officers.
The department also hosted a C.O.P.S. Family Event at Fairfax County Criminal Justice Academy for families of fallen officers from across the country.
Police Week serves as both a reminder of sacrifice and a celebration of unity within law enforcement. The legacy of those lost continues to be honored by those who serve today.
