The Fairfax County Department of Planning and Development has started the Franconia-Springfield Planning Study to update the county’s Comprehensive Plan for the Franconia-Springfield Transit Station Area and Springfield Community Business Center. These areas are located near Interstate 95.

According to the county, this study is being conducted under the direction of the Board of Supervisors. It will incorporate recommendations from a market study completed in 2022 for the Franconia-Springfield area. The current Comprehensive Plan has not undergone a full review in over 17 years, and officials say this new effort aims to set a vision that will guide development and policy decisions for at least the next two decades.

Community participation is being encouraged as part of the process. “We’re inviting the Springfield community to help shape the area’s future as we begin a new planning study,” said representatives from Fairfax County Government. Residents are invited to join a virtual community kickoff meeting scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m., where more information about the study will be shared.

Fairfax County is also offering residents opportunities to sign up for email notifications regarding project updates and future engagement events, which are planned through spring 2026. Community feedback, together with staff analysis, will help determine land use, transportation priorities, and other key aspects affecting Springfield’s future.

In addition to public comments, county officials are accepting proposals for land use changes by email during the visioning and analysis phases of the study. Submissions must meet specific requirements listed on the project’s website and are due by Oct. 24.

More information about how to participate or submit proposals can be found on Fairfax County’s official study webpage.
