Fairfax County officials announced on April 20 that polling places will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. for the upcoming Election Day on April 21, where voters will decide on a proposed amendment to the Constitution of Virginia. Residents must vote at their designated precinct or complete same-day registration at the polling place corresponding to their current address.

The election centers around whether the General Assembly should be allowed to temporarily adopt new congressional districts to restore fairness in upcoming elections, with standard redistricting resuming after the 2030 census. The measure is intended to address concerns about equitable representation until permanent procedures are reinstated.

Voters are encouraged to confirm their registration status and polling location before heading out. Acceptable forms of identification include photo IDs such as Virginia driver’s licenses (even if expired), government-issued IDs, college IDs, or documents like utility bills and paychecks that display name and current address.

Same-day voter registration is available only at a voter’s precinct polling place, requiring those who register on Election Day to cast provisional ballots subject to post-election review. Curbside voting will be offered for individuals aged 65 or older or those with disabilities, illnesses, or injuries preventing them from entering the polling place. Accessible ballot marking machines in four languages and assistance by designees are also provided for voters with visual impairments or physical disabilities.

Mail-in ballots can be returned at any polling site drop box on Election Day or deposited in a secure drop-off box at Fairfax County Government Center before polls close at 7 p.m., provided they are postmarked by April 21 and received by noon on April 24. State law requires mail-in voters to include partial Social Security numbers and birth years under a concealed flap along with their signature; mailed ballots can be tracked online.

Officials emphasize that comprehensive security measures protect every vote through accurate recording, secure storage, proper counting processes, and post-election canvassing.
