The Fairfax County Police Department announced on March 11 that it will increase traffic safety efforts throughout the month as warmer weather and longer daylight hours bring more activity to local roadways.

Officials say the combination of enforcement and education is aimed at reducing dangerous driving behaviors such as impaired driving, speeding, and distracted driving. The department also plans to focus on protecting vulnerable road users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists, as seasonal activity increases.

Several events in March, including college basketball’s March Madness tournament and St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, are expected to lead to increased travel and social gatherings. Police said these events can result in more impaired driving incidents, especially during evenings and late-night hours. Officers will conduct additional patrols focused on impaired driving enforcement throughout the month. “Making responsible transportation choices is essential,” the department said.

As temperatures rise and daylight extends, police urge drivers to remain alert for increased pedestrian, bicycle, and motorcycle activity—particularly in neighborhoods, near parks, shopping areas, and along major commuting routes. The department emphasized that everyone plays a role in roadway safety by slowing down, staying attentive, and following traffic laws.

The police offered several tips for drivers: slow down; stay alert in neighborhoods and school zones; look carefully for pedestrians at intersections; allow motorcycles full use of their lane; provide extra following distance; and avoid distractions like cell phones while driving. Pedestrians are encouraged to cross at marked crosswalks when possible, make eye contact with drivers before entering the roadway, stay alert when crossing streets, and wear bright or reflective clothing at night. Bicyclists and motorcyclists should obey all traffic laws and signals, use proper lighting in low-light conditions, ride predictably with signaled turns, and wear approved protective gear.

The Fairfax County Police Department encourages residents to stay alert and make responsible choices as spring brings more people outdoors. The department also invites those interested in joining its team or supporting investigations through camera registration to visit its website.
