The Fairfax County Police Department recognized on Mar. 10 the important role women play in law enforcement as part of Women’s History Month.
The department said that women serve in all areas, including patrol, investigations, specialized units, leadership positions, and professional staff roles. Their involvement is seen as essential to public safety and the future of policing in Fairfax County.
Women in the department respond to emergencies, mentor youth, train recruits, and work in units such as SWAT, Crisis Intervention, Major Crimes, and Traffic Safety. The department noted that their leadership and commitment help strengthen its ability to protect and serve the community.
Recent academy sessions have seen women make up about a quarter of each graduating class. This growth aligns with the department’s participation in the national 30×30 Initiative, which aims for 30% representation of women in law enforcement by 2030. The department also runs programs like hiring expos focused on women, college outreach efforts, mentorship opportunities, and a Future Women in Law Enforcement program for high school students interested in public safety careers.
In its statement, the department said it honors “the trailblazers who paved the way” as well as current leaders and officers who “serve with professionalism, courage, and dedication every day.” Looking ahead, officials said they remain committed to increasing opportunities for women and ensuring that their workforce reflects the diversity of Fairfax County.
