Speeding continues to be a significant concern for the Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD), with officers regularly encountering drivers traveling at dangerous speeds. The department reports that recent stops have involved motorists driving well above posted limits, including some exceeding 115 miles per hour and others engaging in aggressive maneuvers such as weaving through traffic or running red lights.
“Every stop is an opportunity—not just to issue a citation, but to potentially prevent the next crash,” according to the FCPD.
The department highlights several risks associated with speeding. Faster driving reduces reaction time, increases the severity of crashes, raises the chance of losing control of a vehicle, and amplifies dangers posed by unpredictable road conditions. These risks are present even when roads appear empty or clear.
To address these issues, FCPD’s Traffic Division conducts regular enforcement campaigns in areas identified as high-risk based on crash data and community feedback. Patrol officers also take immediate action when they observe dangerous driving behaviors.
In addition to local efforts, FCPD partners with Virginia State Police in the Road Shark initiative—a campaign focused on enforcement and education regarding aggressive driving and speeding. The next phase of Road Shark is scheduled to begin August 4, featuring increased traffic enforcement throughout Fairfax County.
The police department encourages all drivers to follow posted speed limits, allow extra travel time, remain alert for pedestrians and cyclists, avoid distractions—especially at higher speeds—and prioritize safety over speed.
“Lives depend on your decisions behind the wheel. Slow down. Drive responsibly. Help us make Fairfax County’s roads safer for everyone,” states the FCPD.
