As the Labor Day weekend approaches, the Fairfax County Police Department is urging residents to prioritize safety whether they are traveling, staying home, or spending time on the water.

The department advises those heading to events to anticipate increased traffic and plan routes ahead of time. Drivers are reminded to obey all traffic laws, wear seatbelts, stay within speed limits, and avoid using phones while driving. Those who plan to consume alcohol are encouraged to arrange for a sober ride through a friend, taxi, or rideshare service before leaving home. Extra caution is recommended around crosswalks and areas where children or cyclists may be present.

For residents celebrating at home, police suggest supervising children closely around sharp tools, fire sources, and pools. Home security systems should be activated and any suspicious activity reported to law enforcement. The department also recommends keeping a first aid kit nearby and reviewing basic emergency procedures.

Travelers leaving town for the holiday are encouraged to secure all doors and windows before departing, store valuables out of sight, and notify a trusted neighbor who can monitor their property. Authorities also advise against posting travel plans on social media until returning home.

Those planning activities on local waterways should ensure everyone wears properly fitted life jackets at all times. Boaters are reminded that alcohol use is not permitted for operators and that boating plans should be shared with someone on shore. Emergency communication devices should be kept onboard and weather conditions monitored throughout outings.

“Our Marine Patrol Unit will be actively patrolling throughout the weekend to help ensure a safe environment on our waterways,” according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

The department encourages community members: “Let’s work together to make this Labor Day safe for everyone.” In case of emergencies residents should call 911; non-emergency concerns can be directed to 703-691-2131.
