Fairfax County Police announced on Mar. 16 that a man was arrested for peeping into occupied homes in Reston after officers used a drone to locate him within seconds of the initial report.
The incident highlights the department’s use of technology, specifically its Drone as First Responder program, to quickly respond to and investigate crimes involving residents’ privacy and safety.
According to police, officers responded at 11:17 p.m. on March 13 to a call from a victim who saw an unknown man looking through her bedroom window in the 12000 block of Waterside View Drive. Detectives from the Real Time Crime Center launched a drone that arrived at the scene in just 38 seconds and soon located the suspect peering through other windows nearby. Patrol officers were directed by detectives to his location, where Larry Mudd, age 35 of Reston, was taken into custody.
Mudd was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center and charged with three counts of Peeping into an Occupied Dwelling before being released on personal recognizance bond. Investigators said they do not believe he is connected with ongoing burglary cases in Centreville.
Detectives are asking anyone with information about these incidents or who may have been affected by Mudd’s actions to contact the Reston Police Station or submit tips anonymously through Crime Solvers by phone or web. Victim specialists from the Major Crimes Bureau’s Victim Services Division have been assigned to support those impacted.
Police also encourage residents to register their security cameras with Connect Fairfax County as part of efforts to solve crimes and assist investigations.
