Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is working toward achieving Purple Star Division status by the 2026-27 school year, a recognition given to Virginia school districts when all their schools earn or maintain the Purple Star Designation. The designation honors schools that provide strong support for students from military families.
Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid stated, “When a family member serves in the military, everyone in the family serves.”
Currently, more than 12,000 students with military connections are enrolled in FCPS. The division has 96 schools that have already received the Purple Star recognition. This year, about 90 additional schools are expected to either earn or renew their status, which would mean nearly 70% of FCPS schools would be recognized.
To help achieve full participation among its more than 200 schools, the FCPS Office of Family and School Partnerships provides guidance to those new to the application process and to understanding military culture.
Dr. Reid expressed her hope that all principals will participate in this effort: “The Purple Star Designation supports an inclusive and welcoming school culture for all students and families,” she said. “Therefore, it is beneficial for ALL schools to have the designation, no matter what percentage of their student body are military-connected. At FCPS, one of our strengths is our wonderful diversity. We celebrate the unique qualities that each and every student brings to our community.”
This initiative aligns with Goal 2 of the FCPS 2023-30 Strategic Plan: Safe, Supported, Included, and Empowered, which emphasizes creating a positive climate where students feel they belong.
