Fairfax County Public Schools announced on March 11 several updates for students, families, and staff, including schedule changes due to the upcoming statewide election, opportunities for community input on budgets and policies, and recognition of student achievements.
The announcement matters to families and staff as it outlines important dates affecting school schedules, highlights ways to participate in decision-making processes, and celebrates accomplishments within the school community.
Students will not have classes on Tuesday, April 21 due to the Virginia statewide election. While student activities may continue as planned, principals may adjust event times or entry points to keep polling areas separate from student spaces. The district confirmed that instructional hours will still exceed state requirements set by the Virginia Department of Education. Teachers and staff were advised to check their email for further details sent by the division.
Community members are encouraged to provide feedback on the county’s 2027 Fiscal Year Advertised Budget through a survey. About 70% of the FCPS budget comes from the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, which is currently reviewing possible adjustments before adopting a final budget in May.
Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid continues her engagement with families through Community Conversations events this spring at various elementary schools across Fairfax County. “Connecting with community members across Fairfax County is critical to Dr. Reid,” according to information provided by FCPS. Registration is available but not required for these events.
The district also highlighted ongoing initiatives such as the Family Engagement Survey open through March 23 in multiple languages; recognition of 80 FCPS students as U.S. Presidential Scholars candidates; and honors given to students receiving Student Peace Awards from 28 public schools in Fairfax County.
Other announcements include resources offered by the Family Academy for parents and guardians; observance days for Eid al-Fitr and Nowruz; upcoming events like the Regional Science Fair; and reminders about cell phone policies designed to support learning environments.
Looking ahead, FCPS encourages continued participation in surveys regarding public schools and fine arts standards as part of broader efforts to involve families and stakeholders in shaping educational experiences.
