Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) announced on April 8 a series of upcoming events, recognitions, and opportunities for students, families, and staff throughout the month of April.

The announcement highlights the importance of supporting military-connected families during the Month of the Military Child. FCPS is encouraging all members of its community to participate in Purple Up! Day on Wednesday, April 15 by wearing purple to honor children from military families. The color purple was chosen because it represents all branches of the U.S. military.

In addition to this observance, FCPS reported that 241 students from 16 public schools have been named National Merit finalists for 2026. Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology had the highest number with 105 finalists. The district also noted a significant increase—37%—in National Merit Semifinalists compared to last year.

Community engagement remains a priority as Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid continues her Community Conversations series at various elementary schools across Fairfax County in mid-April. These sessions are open to everyone interested in sharing feedback or asking questions about school initiatives.

Budget discussions are ongoing as about seventy percent of FCPS’s funding comes from the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, which is currently reviewing adjustments before adopting its Fiscal Year (FY) 2027 budget in May. Residents can provide input at several public hearings scheduled between April 14 and April 16 or through online channels provided by county officials.

Other notable events include a Special Education Family Conference on Saturday, April 18 at Marshall High School; career exploration activities for students with disabilities; recognition weeks for assistant principals and paraprofessionals; an instructional job fair on Saturday, April 11; observances such as Theravada New Year; statewide election day closures; free meal offerings for children on election day; library appreciation initiatives; and regular updates regarding School Board meetings and calendar changes.

These activities reflect FCPS’s ongoing efforts to foster student achievement, community involvement, support diverse learners’ needs, and maintain transparent communication about key decisions affecting local education.
