Fairfax County Public Schools announced on Apr. 14 that students will participate in spring assessments according to their grade level and courses, including standardized benchmark and progress assessments.

The assessments are an important part of the educational process, providing a consistent measure of student learning across the state. The results help guide instructional planning, course placement decisions, eligibility for advanced or support programs, and in some cases graduation requirements.

Each school sets its own specific testing dates and communicates these schedules directly to students and families through newsletters and emails. The division encourages families to review this information carefully to stay informed about upcoming tests.

The district said that participation in Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments ensures accurate understanding of academic strengths and areas where additional support may be needed. “While no single test tells the whole story about a child, SOLs provide a consistent, statewide measure of progress toward grade-level standards. Your student’s participation ensures we have an accurate understanding of their academic strengths and areas where additional support may be helpful,” the statement said.

Parents are encouraged to help their children prepare by ensuring they get enough sleep and eat a healthy breakfast on testing days. Attendance on scheduled testing dates is important; families should notify schools as soon as possible if conflicts arise. Electronic devices are not permitted during testing except under special circumstances related to health conditions. The district also reminds families that learning continues through the last day of school even after spring assessments conclude.
