Fairfax County Public Schools announced on Mar. 25 that the two previously scheduled elementary early release days in April will be canceled and replaced with full instructional days.

The change comes as a result of a newly announced special election on Tuesday, April 21, which will require many FCPS schools to serve as polling locations. As a result, schools will be closed for students on that day and April 21 is now designated as a teacher workday and staff development day.

Superintendent Dr. Michelle C. Reid said the adjustment was made after considering school cancellations and delays due to weather, stating that “the two previously scheduled elementary early release days in April (April 22 and April 29) will be converted.” She added, “Students will have a traditional full day of instruction and will be released at the regular dismissal time on April 22 and April 29.”

Reid explained that this change allows staff to maintain dedicated time for planning, collaboration, and professional learning without reducing instructional time elsewhere in the school calendar. She also acknowledged the impact schedule changes can have on families: “We understand that changes to the schedule can affect family routines and appreciate your flexibility and understanding.”

The announcement was shared just before Spring Break, with Reid encouraging families to enjoy their time off: “Have a restful and renewing break.”
