The Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) face a potential budget shortfall of $150 million, as the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors prepares to finalize the budget on May 6. Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid has linked this shortfall to the lack of revenue from initiatives such as the meals tax, which would marginally raise dining costs for families and potentially alleviate the financial strain on FCPS.

Parents and guardians of students entering the 7th and 12th grades are reminded of the required immunizations. Seventh graders must receive doses of Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis booster (Tdap), along with the Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) and the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. Parents can opt out of the HPV vaccine without documentation. Twelfth graders are required to have a dose of the MenACWY vaccine. Fairfax County Health Department and FCPS provided resources for immunization information.

The county health department is also conducting a survey targeting parents of FCPS students to assess satisfaction with school health services. Feedback from this survey is being collected until May 5.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the FCPS Sixth Grade All-County Choral Festival, featuring performances by 804 students from 97 schools. The festival is celebrated as a platform that connects generations and nurtures musical talents within the community.

In Chantilly Academy, cosmetology students continue to contribute to the Day Prom by assisting students with intellectual disabilities in preparation for the event. This initiative is part of the school’s emphasis on service learning.

For high school students, FCPS offers virtual therapy sessions to assist with issues such as mood changes, motivation, anxiety, and social skills. Guardians or designated school staff can refer students to these free services.

Dr. Reid has reported improvements in recent graduation and dropout rates within the Strategic Plan Goal 5 report, stating, “Every student will graduate ready to thrive in life after high school and with the skills to navigate, adapt, and innovate for a sustainable future.” The recent findings showed improvements compared to previous years.

Further focusing on closing opportunity gaps, Dr. Reid highlighted the AVID program in her Academic Matters presentation, which seeks to prepare students for college and career readiness.

The community is invited to attend the FCPS Summer Extravaganza on May 10 at Woodson High School. The event will provide a range of educational and enrichment activities for families and children, offering resources from various community and business partners.

On May 3, Historic Schoolhouse Day will open the doors to former FCPS one- and two-room schoolhouses, allowing visitors to explore Virginia’s educational heritage through tours and engaging activities.

Finally, the FCPS Office of the Ombuds is available for confidential guidance regarding questions and concerns. They offer service without the authority to change policies or provide legal advice, working instead as an independent resource for the FCPS community.
