Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has released several updates and reminders for families as the new school year progresses.

Parents and caregivers are encouraged to complete all required forms at the start of the school year. These include permission forms, immunization records, and acknowledgment of the Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) document. Families without a SIS ParentVUE account are advised to contact their child’s school for activation instructions. The SR&R form should be signed and returned by Tuesday, September 30.

Immunization compliance remains a priority. Students who have not provided proof of immunization may not be allowed to attend school starting Tuesday, November 18. Parents can check compliance status or submit records through SIS ParentVUE or directly to their school’s front office.

The division’s latest Standards of Learning (SOL) results show FCPS continues to outperform state averages in science, math, and reading. The Virginia Department of Education’s annual pass rates released on August 27 indicate year-on-year gains across these core subjects. “These impressive results reflect the hard work of our staff, our students, and their supportive families. We should all feel proud of this achievement!” according to FCPS.

Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid will host a series of Community Conversations throughout the division, inviting parents to discuss current challenges and future opportunities. Events begin Monday, September 15 at Woodlawn Elementary School with additional dates scheduled into December.

Dr. Reid also shares weekly updates through her Weekly Reflections newsletter, which recently highlighted a ribbon cutting at Wakefield Forest Elementary School following renovations funded by previous bond referendums.

A $460 million School Bond Referendum will appear on the general election ballot on Tuesday, November 4. If approved by voters, it will fund projects outlined in the FY 2026-30 Capital Improvement Program approved by the School Board in February. School construction and renovation are funded through these bonds rather than the operating budget.

SAT School Day and PSAT/NMSQT exams will take place Wednesday, October 8 at all high schools at no cost to families. Twelfth graders will take the SAT while tenth and eleventh graders take the PSAT/NMSQT digitally. Most ninth grade students will not have classes that day but are encouraged to use the time for assignments; those receiving certain special education services will still attend with an early release.

Fifth grade teacher Kylee West from Bailey’s Upper Elementary was recognized as FCPS CARES of the Quarter for her compassion and dedication after assisting a student caring for younger siblings. “Kylee exemplifies the spirit of this award through her extraordinary compassion, dedication, and commitment to children, families, and the community,” stated FCPS.

Robinson Secondary earned both academic and athletic honors by winning the Virginia High School League National Guard Cup in both categories for 2024-25—a rare achievement highlighting student success across disciplines.

The district continues implementing its 2023-30 Strategic Plan focused on equitable access to electives and enrichment activities for all students under Goal 4: Equitable Access and Opportunities.

Families can access information about special education support in FCPS’ Special Education and Section 504 Newsletter distributed by the Department of Special Services.

Applications open Monday, October 20 for eighth graders interested in Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST). Details are available on TJHSST’s registration page along with upcoming information session schedules.

The comprehensive boundary review process is entering Phase 2 (Part 2), with community meetings scheduled throughout September at various high schools including Justice High School on September 15 and Oakton High School on September 17. Updated draft boundary scenarios will be presented in October community meetings using feedback collected during these sessions.

Several calendar reminders were issued: elementary schools in select pyramids will release three hours early on Wednesday, September 17; Constitution Day is observed September 17; National Voter Registration Day falls on September 17; Rosh Hashanah begins at sundown Monday, September 22 with schools closed Tuesday, September 23; Sun Day celebrating solar initiatives is set for Sunday, September 21 at Louise Archer Elementary; and a regular School Board meeting is scheduled Thursday, September 11 at 7 p.m., covering advisory committee appointments and contract awards.
