Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has launched its first Summer Internship program, welcoming a group of current students and recent graduates. The six-week paid internship received nearly 950 applications, resulting in a highly competitive selection process. Those selected have been recognized for their talent, passion, and professionalism.

The interns were welcomed by Chief of Human Resources William Solomon and Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid. Dr. Reid expressed support by stating, “You are here because we value your perspectives, your voices, and your talents, and we can’t wait to see how you’ll shine as part of Team FCPS!”

Celeste Jones, the Human Resources Business Partner and Internship Coordinator, oversees the program. Interns chose from various departments such as Capital Programs and Planning, Educate Fairfax, Facilities Management, Human Resources, Procurement Services, School Operations, School Safety and Security among others.

Throughout the internship, participants will gain practical experience while engaging in professional development sessions focused on effective communication, personal finance management, resumé writing skills, and networking opportunities. This is made possible through sponsors like Apple Federal Credit Union and Educate Fairfax.

Interns will work on significant projects that enhance their connection with FCPS as they prepare for future careers. They will also receive professional headshots to enhance their digital portfolios.

Dylan Gwyn from Westfield High School is interning with the Office of School Safety and Security. He stated his motivation: “I wanted to do this internship to build my resumé and start [learning about the workforce] early. I already know I’m studying criminal justice [at Radford University] next year.”

This initiative aligns with FCPS’ Strategic Plan Goal 5: Leading for Tomorrow’s Innovation which aims to equip students with essential life skills post-high school.

The inaugural class is expected to set high standards while gaining valuable experiences for their future careers.
