Fairfax County Public Schools recognized the contributions of assistant principals during National Assistant Principals Week, which takes place from April 6 to April 10. The district highlighted the important role these educators play in supporting students, teachers, and school communities.

The recognition comes as schools across the country observe National Assistant Principals Week to honor those who help create positive learning environments. Fairfax County Public Schools said its assistant principals work every day to ensure that students thrive and staff feel valued.

Dominic Williams, assistant principal at Union Mill Elementary School, was named the 2025 Outstanding School-Based Leader at Fairfax County Public Schools. Williams said he understands what it is like for students who struggle in school and works to make sure every student feels they belong and can succeed regardless of their background or abilities. His career began with the county’s School Age Child Care program before moving into various teaching roles within the district.

Williams joined Union Mill Elementary in 2023. Since then, he has helped the school earn a Purple Star designation for supporting military families and has started weekly shoutout videos recognizing exceptional students and staff. Principal Scott Hawk said, “Mr. Williams empowers staff, students, and families by putting them at the center of the learning process. His positive energy and dedication to creating a supportive and inclusive school environment make him an outstanding leader.”

The district encouraged community members to watch more “In the Spotlight” videos featuring stories like Williams’s as part of its ongoing effort to celebrate educational leadership.
