Fairfax County Public Schools announced on Apr. 19 that a fire occurred at Bren Mar Park Elementary School in Alexandria. The incident took place Sunday afternoon and was limited to materials on the roof of the building’s new section, which is still under construction.

The school division said the fire did not affect the main school building and confirmed that no one was inside during the event. Officials expressed gratitude for the swift response by the Fairfax County Fire Department, saying their actions prevented a more serious situation.

“We would like to express our gratitude to the Fairfax County Fire Department and all the firefighters who responded quickly and worked to bring the situation under control. Their quick response prevented this from becoming a much more serious situation,” Fairfax County Public Schools said in a statement.

While an investigation into what caused the fire continues, officials reported that students can safely return to school as scheduled. The Fire Marshal determined it is safe for classes to resume without disruption.

The statement concluded with thanks directed toward first responders and members of the community for their concern.
