Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) reported that its students continue to outperform state averages in the 2025 Standards of Learning (SOL) results. The Virginia Department of Education released annual pass rates on August 27, showing year-on-year gains for FCPS across science, math, and reading.
According to FCPS, these results reflect the combined efforts of staff, students, and families. The division saw improvements in all three federally reported subject areas compared to last year, despite more rigorous SOL tests in reading and mathematics.
Science scores showed the most progress among student groups. Hispanic students improved by four percentage points, while students with disabilities, multilingual learners, and those in the Black and Economically Disadvantaged reporting groups each saw a three-point increase. In mathematics, there was a three-point gain for students with disabilities, multilingual learners, as well as Black and Hispanic student groups.
“In partnership with our parents and community, we launched the FCPS Strategic Plan in 2023 and we continue to see strong results, particularly in our focus around access to advanced math,” said Superintendent Dr. Michelle C. Reid. “In fact, FCPS has increased the number of 8th graders enrolled in Algebra 1 or higher from 58.4% in 2022 to 74.5% for the start of this school year. We are also excited to share that we have expanded access to Algebra 1 for sixth graders this school year. I am so grateful for the hard work of our staff in all their unique roles who are making this possible for our students.”
The school division noted it has seven out of the top ten high schools in Virginia and holds the number five spot nationally according to U.S. News and World Report.
