Arman Nikmorad, a technician for Fairfax County Public Schools, described his daily work and career journey in a statement released on May 11. Nikmorad, who graduated from McLean High School in 2022, said his responsibilities include maintaining broadcast equipment, supporting livestreams of School Board meetings, and training students on audiovisual technology.
Nikmorad’s experience highlights the opportunities available to students within the school system. He started as a student producer interested in broadcast journalism before interning with the Department of Information Technology (DIT), which later led to a full-time job while he attended George Mason University.
“I really loved what I’ve been doing since elementary school,” Nikmorad said. “I asked them, ‘Hey, I want to help other schools in the county, too.’” He credited McLean High School’s broadcast program for giving him confidence and skills that shaped his current role.
His duties vary widely each day—from operating production trucks during live broadcasts to planning new TV studios or podcast rooms for students. Nikmorad emphasized that working behind the scenes also provided opportunities to meet notable figures such as NASA Administrator Bill Nelson and U.S. Senator Tim Kaine. “I had no idea this job would offer so many chances to meet people,” he said.
Mentorship has played an important role in his success. Nikmorad cited support from DIT engineer Phil and Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid as key influences: “She’s been my cheerleader,” he said about Dr. Reid. “She tells me, ‘Arman, if your grades slip, I don’t want you working here so much. School is your number one priority.’”
Looking ahead, Nikmorad will graduate this spring with top honors from George Mason University but remains committed to supporting local schools where he began his journey.
