Fairfax County announced on Mar. 9 the launch of its new Cultural and Recreational Opportunity Dashboard, which provides data on access to local arts, sports, and cultural activities for residents.

The dashboard aims to inform residents and stakeholders about the availability and participation in cultural and recreational opportunities across the county. It is designed to monitor progress over time, identify demographic or geographic disparities, and guide community leaders in making data-driven decisions.

The dashboard presents information under four main indicators: access to local arts, sports, and cultural opportunities; satisfaction with these opportunities; awareness and appreciation of diverse cultures; and representation of diverse cultures. Three headline metrics are included: proximity to centers, availability of community activities, and average visitors to centers.

According to the data provided for 2024, more than 93% of Fairfax County residents lived within a mile of a cultural or recreational center such as community centers, public schools, libraries, museums, or arts venues. The average monthly visitors to Park Authority facilities, Neighborhood and Community Services centers, and public libraries totaled nearly 150,000 in fiscal year 2025. Among youth surveyed in 2024, 94% reported that sports teams or after-school activities were available in their communities. For older adults surveyed in 2022, 79% rated educational and cultural opportunities as excellent or good while 68% gave similar ratings for recreation options including games and library services.

This is the ninth dashboard published as part of the Fairfax Countywide Strategic Plan’s implementation efforts. Each of the plan’s ten Community Outcome Areas will have its own dashboard. The Cultural and Recreational Opportunities Dashboard will be updated annually to track trends over time.
