The Fairfax County School Board unanimously adopted the Fiscal Year 2027 Approved Budget on May 21, continuing its focus on competitive compensation and strategic investments for student success. The board said the new budget maintains key investments and restores several reductions made during the prior fiscal year, despite ongoing challenges from state underfunding and economic uncertainty.
Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid recently visited Great Falls Elementary School to observe the tae kwon do program, which parents appreciate as a physical outlet for students. Teachers have observed positive changes in classrooms since the program began.
Student accomplishments were also highlighted this week. Lily, a senior at West Potomac High School, plans to become a 911 operator after graduating. Her interest in emergency services was sparked by participating in the 911 Dispatch class at West Potomac Academy and her exposure to Fairfax County Department of Public Safety Communications.
At Oakton High School, seniors Jovina and Victoria combined their interests in medicine, engineering, and education through their nonprofit ImagineHere. They developed hands-on STEM programs for younger students, published a children’s book about hearing loss awareness, and raised funds to help others access hearing aids.
Bryant High School senior Mohammad earned several state-level medals over three years while preparing for an apprenticeship after graduation. His journey from Yemen to the United States has inspired classmates; he discussed his SkillsUSA awards with Dr. Reid alongside his peers.
Other announcements include registration closing June 5 for summer classes with FCPS’ Online Campus; literacy instruction improvements discussed by Dr. Reid at last Thursday’s board meeting; an event celebrating Dunn Loring Center’s history scheduled for May 30; family information phone lines available in eight languages; reminders that June 17 is the last day of school with early dismissal schedules; August 24 marks the first day of school next year; and June 10 will be the final regular issue of “FCPS This Week” for this academic year.
