The Fairfax County School Board approved the Fiscal Year 2027 budget and adopted several resolutions during its regular meeting held on May 21. The session began at 7:12 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of silence, and a performance of the National Anthem by the Spring Hill Elementary School Strong Orchestra under Margot Mevinsky’s direction.
Chair Anderson welcomed Virginia Delegate and former Fairfax County School Board Member Karen Keys-Gamarra as well as Christopher J. Falcon, Fairfax County Clerk of the Court, who attended the meeting. The board recognized Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Children’s Mental Health and Wellness Month, and Speech-Language-Hearing Month through official proclamations.
Among other actions, the board adopted resolutions dedicating the Hank Novak Press Box at Justice High School and honoring National Law Day. Sixteen members of the public addressed the board during Community Participation.
Student Representative Faith Mekonen presented Student Representative Matters to board members. The board also approved a follow-on motion directing Superintendent Dr. Michelle C. Reid to develop a document outlining financial management principles for discussion at an upcoming Budget Committee Meeting scheduled by September 2026.
Dr. Reid delivered a Secondary Literacy Update as part of Academic Matters presented to the board. Additional consent agenda items included approval of employee separation reports for April 2026, nomination for a state workforce readiness award, and awarding several contracts.
Several new business items were introduced without votes taken; these included proposals regarding land rights for bus stop improvements near South Lakes High School in Reston, contract adjustments at Hayfield Secondary School, updates to leasing policies for school facilities, site planning guidelines, instructional technology motions, naming South County Middle School Library after founding principal Marsha Manning, calendar policy revisions, Centreville High lease assessments, strategic governance manual changes, community use policies for school facilities among others.
Committee reports were given by Mr. McElveen (Audit), Mr. McDaniel (Comprehensive Planning), Ms. Meren (Governance), and Mr. Frisch (Administration). Superintendent Dr. Reid also addressed matters relevant to her office before closing remarks from various board members concluded proceedings at 11:17 p.m.
The next advisory committee summit is scheduled for May 30 while another regular meeting will take place on June 11.
