Fairfax County warns against parking lot repair scams

Recently, the Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) has alerted the public about a scam targeting drivers in local parking lots. The scheme involves scammers who offer quick and affordable car repairs but leave behind poor workmanship and potential damage.

The scam typically unfolds when an individual approaches a driver in a parking lot, claiming to be associated with a well-known car brand. They propose to fix minor dents or scratches while the owner shops, offering what seems like a reasonable price for quick service. However, victims often return to find unsatisfactory results or additional damage. Scammers may also demand more money than initially quoted and only accept cash or gift cards. By the time the deception is realized, the perpetrator has vanished.

To help identify these scams, FCPD highlights several red flags: unsolicited repair offers in parking lots, use of recognizable brand names to gain trust, requests for payment in cash or gift cards, high-pressure tactics urging immediate action, and claims that the “repair” should not be touched for 24 hours.

The police department advises drivers to decline such offers politely and walk away since reputable auto repair services do not operate this way. They recommend never paying with cash or gift cards for on-the-spot repairs and suggest taking vehicles to trusted auto body shops with proper credentials and reviews. Trusting one’s instincts is emphasized—if something feels wrong, it likely is.

Those approached by scammers or who believe they have been targeted are encouraged to report incidents by calling the Non-Emergency Number at 703-691-2131.

FCPD stresses that staying informed is crucial for safety and encourages sharing these tips with family, friends, and neighbors. Additionally, residents can register their cameras with Connect Fairfax County to aid FCPD in solving crimes and supporting investigations.
