Fairfax County Public Schools announced on June 1 that the independent, external legal investigation into sexual misconduct involving former Fairfax High School student Israel Flores Ortiz has concluded.

Superintendent Dr. Michelle C. Reid said in a letter to the school community that providing a safe and supportive environment for students remains a top priority for the district. “I am writing to provide an important update regarding the independent, external legal investigation into the sexual misconduct involving former student Israel Flores Ortiz. That external review is now complete,” Reid said.

Reid explained that upon receiving reports of misconduct, school administrators and staff acted urgently by using hallway surveillance footage to identify the suspect. Once identified, Ortiz was immediately removed from class and separated from other students before being placed in police custody. He was subsequently tried, convicted, and is currently incarcerated.

“The external investigation confirmed that our administration acted promptly and appropriately to stop this behavior,” Reid said.

She also expressed gratitude toward Fairfax High School administrators, staff, and law enforcement partners for their swift efforts to maintain safety and ensure accountability when laws are broken.

Reid concluded by thanking families for their partnership and trust in supporting student safety.
