The Fairfax Countywide Strategic Plan has introduced its seventh dashboard, focusing on Environment & Energy. This initiative is part of a broader effort to create dashboards for each of the 10 Community Outcome Areas. The new dashboard highlights key indicators such as promoting air, water, and land quality and supporting sound environmental policy and practices.
These indicators are measured through eight headline metrics including greenhouse gas emissions, water pollution reduction in the Chesapeake Bay, flood events, temperature changes, solar installations, electric vehicle adoption, tree canopy coverage, and waste diversion. The dashboard aims to inform residents and stakeholders, monitor progress over time, identify demographic or geographic disparities among residents, and guide community leaders in making data-driven decisions.
The data reveals significant trends: Fairfax County’s community-wide greenhouse gas emissions decreased by 30% from 2005 to 2020. Within county government operations alone, there was a 28% reduction since the 2018 baseline as of FY24. Air quality has improved significantly with only three air quality action days in 2024 compared to fifty in 1980.
Average temperatures are rising steadily with an increase in hot nights where temperatures do not drop below 70°F; there were forty-three such nights recorded in 2024. Urban heat islands are particularly affected but nearly eighty percent have cooling centers nearby.
Renewable energy sources like solar installations have expanded dramatically from eight hundred forty-four units in 2018 to four thousand seven hundred fifty-three units by 2023. Meanwhile building energy usage decreased by nine percent during this period within the community while county government electricity from renewable sources was at zero point two percent for FY24 with annual energy usage declining sixteen percent since FY18.
Electric vehicle registrations have tripled from one percent in 2020 to three percent of light-duty vehicles registered by 2023 within Fairfax County while ten percent (or two hundred twenty-four) of county government fleet vehicles were electric as of FY24—a trend expected to accelerate further as market conditions evolve favorably toward electric vehicles.
The Environment & Energy dashboard will undergo yearly updates allowing continued monitoring of these trends via the Countywide Data Analytics webpage alongside other dashboards available under Fairfax Countywide Strategic Plan resources online including tutorials on navigation use provided therein along contact details should queries arise regarding specific content featured across these
