Faith Mekonen, a senior at South County High School, has been chosen by the Student Advisory Council to serve as the student representative on the Fairfax County School Board for the 2025-26 term. Her role will commence on July 1, succeeding Megan Sawant from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. Mekonen will be the 55th student to hold this position.

Mekonen’s priorities include addressing discipline disproportionality, enhancing student input in policy-making, and implementing revised grading and cell phone policies. “One issue that stands out is the ongoing debate over FCPS’s grading policy, particularly regarding retakes and consistency across classrooms,” she stated. As part of the Grading Standardization Advisory Committee, she aims to ensure fair and effective policies that support learning.

She plans to engage with students using social media and newsletters to gather feedback through surveys or other methods. “I believe that student voice is key for a successful school district,” Mekonen emphasized.

Mekonen’s experience includes serving as Vice President of her school’s Ethiopian & Eritrean Association, Model UN Secretary, U.S Department of Education Youth Advisor, Harvard STRIPED Youth Policy Translator, among other roles.
