As winter arrives, Falls Church City Public Schools (FCCPS) is reminding families and staff about steps to prevent the spread of respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses. The guidance comes as the region experiences a rise in cases during flu season.

FCCPS, following recommendations from the Virginia Department of Health and Fairfax County Health Department, advises anyone with symptoms such as fever, persistent cough, sore throat, vomiting, or diarrhea to stay home until they are symptom-free for at least 24 hours without medication.

For gastrointestinal issues like vomiting or diarrhea, students and staff should remain home for at least 24 hours after symptoms stop and only return when they can eat normally and participate in daily activities. This measure aims to limit transmission within schools.

The school division emphasizes hand hygiene by encouraging regular handwashing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. When soap is not available, hand sanitizer can be used. Covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue or elbow followed by handwashing is also recommended.

Staying current on vaccinations, including annual flu shots and other immunizations suggested by healthcare providers, is highlighted as an important preventive step. Cleaning high-touch surfaces regularly at home—especially if someone is sick—is encouraged to reduce germs.

FCCPS states that it will continue routine cleaning practices in schools and reinforce healthy habits among students. “We appreciate your partnership in keeping our classrooms safe, healthy, and ready for learning,” FCCPS said in its message to families.

“Thank you for your continued support in promoting wellness across FCCPS!”
