As Peter J. Noonan prepares to conclude his 33-year career in public education, he reflects on his tenure as Superintendent of Falls Church City Public Schools (FCCPS). He describes his eight years with FCCPS as the most rewarding of his career, highlighting the division’s commitment to excellence, equity, and community.
Noonan emphasizes the unique nature of FCCPS, a small division characterized by its dedication to students. He credits the community’s passion and engagement for enabling significant achievements during his leadership.
One notable accomplishment was reviving the Mount Daniel Elementary School addition project. When Noonan arrived, the project had stalled. Through collaboration with the community and government partners, they overcame challenges and stabilized the project. Today, Mount Daniel is described as a welcoming place for young learners.
Another major achievement was constructing a new high school with a $120 million investment. Supported by a bond referendum, this state-of-the-art facility opened on time and under budget. Noonan attributes this success to cooperation among city government, school leadership, and citizens.
Under Noonan’s leadership, FCCPS achieved new academic heights. Students posted top aggregate Standards of Learning scores in Virginia, marking Falls Church City Public Schools as the #1 division in the Commonwealth for seven consecutive years.
The district also celebrated a record number of International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme candidates — 72 — reflecting student ambition and educator support.
As Falls Church experiences growth, strategic steps have been taken to prepare for future educational needs. This includes updating facilities and planning for future learning environments.
Noonan acknowledges that these achievements result from collective efforts within FCCPS. He praises dedicated professionals across classrooms, central office, school board, city government, and an engaged parent community.
Reflecting on his experience in Falls Church, Noonan highlights strong relationships between educators and students, schools and families, and government and community as key to FCCPS’s strength.
He concludes with gratitude towards students who inspired him throughout his tenure: “The students of FCCPS have inspired…and reminded me daily why this work matters.”
Peter J. Noonan leaves with appreciation for being entrusted with leading Falls Church City Public Schools.
