Hundreds of staff, students, and community leaders gathered at the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) State of Our Schools event to recognize student achievement, highlight community partnerships, and discuss the future direction of public education in Fairfax County. The event featured performances by the Chantilly High School Chamber Orchestra and the Falls Church High School Guitar Ensemble.
Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid addressed attendees with updates on key priorities such as the FCPS budget, the Capital Improvement Program, and details about an upcoming Bond election. She also discussed progress on a new western high school intended to serve families in a growing area of the county. Dr. Reid highlighted girls flag football as a successful addition to FCPS sports offerings and reviewed accomplishments from the 2024-25 school year.
Dr. Reid introduced FCPS’ Future-Ready Index, describing it as “a new tool designed to demonstrate how well FCPS supports students on their journey from early learning through graduation and beyond.”
Student participation was central throughout the program. Panels included sixth graders discussing their involvement in an Algebra 1 pilot program, middle schoolers sharing experiences with new track and field and cross country programs, and a high school student explaining how he organized an essay contest with the Embassy of Spain.
Additional speakers included Marty Smith, chief of staff for FCPS; Lynette Henry, executive director of Educate Fairfax; and Sandy Anderson, chair of the Fairfax County School Board. Both Henry and Anderson spoke about ongoing community partnerships that support students within FCPS.
“The event reflected the strong collaboration between students, educators, and community partners working together to ensure every learner is prepared for success — today and in the future,” according to organizers.
