FCPS prepares for upcoming budget meetings amid teacher appreciation celebrations

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is preparing for several key events and updates in the coming weeks. The School Board’s next regular business meeting will take place on Thursday, May 8, at Jackson Middle School. Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid is set to present her recommended budget adjustments following Fairfax County government’s recent budget markup.

A public hearing on final budget adjustments is scheduled for Tuesday, May 13. Community members wishing to speak must sign up by Monday, May 12.

In celebration of National Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week, FCPS acknowledges the dedication of its educators and staff. Last year, Shea Hestmark and Symone Keolani Jenkins were recognized as FCPS Honors winners for their contributions.

Twenty-eight students from nine high schools in Fairfax County have been awarded $2,500 scholarships by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

The second phase of community boundary review meetings will soon begin. These meetings allow families and staff to explore potential boundary scenarios using a Boundary Explorer Tool available online. A series of hybrid meetings are planned throughout May and June at various schools.

FCPS has announced a Summer Internship Program offering paid opportunities for high school students or recent alumni enrolled in post-secondary education. Interns will gain work experience across different departments within FCPS.

An interest meeting for a new Korean Dual Language Immersion Program will be held on Wednesday, May 21, at Halley Elementary School. This event will provide information about the program and allow attendees to give feedback.

Dr. Reid has been attending musical and theater performances across FCPS as part of performance season activities.

At Louise Archer Elementary School in Vienna, a newly renovated lobby features an original wall from the historic schoolhouse attended by former students Alees Coates-Richardson and Gloria Carter decades ago.

Luke Pierce is recognized during Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week for his innovative approach to teaching Music and Computer Technology at West Potomac Academy.

Mountain View High School recently unveiled the Timberwolf Lodge, a student-designed lounge created through a hands-on project by Economic and Personal Finance classes.

The Running is Elementary program continues its tradition of connecting elementary students with West Potomac High School through track meets after months of preparation.

The FCPS Summer Extravaganza event will take place on Saturday, May 10, at Woodson High School featuring educational activities designed to inspire growth among participants.

Adult learners can enroll in ACE’s Speed Spanish course to learn Spanish quickly as part of National Bilingual/Multilingual Learner Advocacy Month initiatives.

Nominations are open for the Dr. Lawrence Bussey Memorial Equity Award recognizing efforts to improve educational experiences for marginalized groups. Submissions are due by Monday, May 19.

Lastly, elementary schools in certain pyramids will have a limited early release on Monday, May 12. More details are available regarding this schedule adjustment.
