Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) has reported the successful use of License Plate Reader (LPR) technology in locating three missing individuals in one day. The Real Time Crime Center played a crucial role in these recoveries by coordinating patrol responses.

On June 15, LPR systems were instrumental in three separate incidents across Fairfax and Montgomery Counties. At 1:46 p.m., an alert was triggered in the Fair Oaks District when a vehicle associated with a missing juvenile was detected. Officers quickly located the vehicle at a shopping center, finding the juvenile safe inside and reuniting them with their family.

Another alert occurred at 2:27 p.m. for a vehicle linked to a critically missing elderly adult. The Real Time Crime Center provided updates on the vehicle’s location, allowing officers to find the individual safely and reunite them with their family.

Later that afternoon, FCPD, along with Montgomery County Police Department, used LPR technology to locate a critically missing man in Montgomery County, who was also safely reunited with his family.

These events underscore how LPR technology enhances public safety and supports FCPD’s mission to protect the community. According to FCPD, “LPRs have significantly enhanced investigative efforts and solved hundreds of complex cases over the past two years,” including various crimes such as malicious woundings and burglaries.

The department also highlighted that LPR technology has led to recovering numerous stolen vehicles and firearms while locating critical missing people. Over two and a half years, FCPD recovered 49 firearms and found 36 critical missing individuals using this technology.

Community engagement is another benefit of LPR technology, enabling officers to solve crimes efficiently and engage more effectively with residents. This fosters trust and cooperation within the community.

FCPD emphasizes its commitment to responsible technology use, ensuring it is not employed for immigration enforcement or minor vehicle violations. Residents are encouraged to register their cameras with Connect Fairfax County to aid in solving crimes and supporting investigations.
