Man charged after alleged assaults near Fair Lakes

On May 28, Fair Oaks Police District officers, with help from Major Crimes Bureau detectives, arrested a man after he allegedly inappropriately touched multiple women near Fair Lakes.

At 5:04 p.m., police responded to the 11700 block of Fair Oaks Mall for a reported sex offense. Two victims stated that a man had approached and touched them inappropriately. Officers increased their presence in the area to find the suspect.

While searching, another call came at 5:17 p.m. regarding a man masturbating in a vehicle at the 13000 block of Fair Lakes Shopping Center. The suspect fled before officers arrived.

Investigators used surveillance footage and Flock technology to gather information about the suspect and his vehicle.

Later, at 7:41 p.m., officers went to the 12200 block of Fairfax Towne Center for another sex offense report. A victim claimed she was assaulted by a man in the parking lot.

Officers located the suspect, Gigssa Bekele Bengessa, 33, at his residence by 8:12 p.m., where he reportedly assaulted an officer before being taken into custody after a brief struggle.

Bekele Bengessa was transported to Fairfax County Adult Detention Center and charged with two counts of sexual battery, indecent exposure, obstruction of justice, and two counts of assault on law enforcement officers. He is held without bond.

Anonymous tipsters may receive cash rewards if they provide contact details for follow-up by detectives.

Victim specialists from the Victim Services Division are assigned to support affected individuals with resources and assistance.

Residents can register their cameras with Connect Fairfax County to assist FCPD in solving crimes and supporting investigations.
