Mental Health Awareness Month is observed annually in May, aiming to combat stigma, provide support, and increase awareness of mental health issues. The National Alliance on Mental Illness reports that nearly one in five people experience a mental health concern each year.

For those experiencing urgent mental health-related distress, the 24/7 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline can be reached at 703-527-4077 or 9-8-8. Alternatively, individuals can text “CONNECT” to 855-11. Walk-in services are available at the Sharon Bulova Center for Community Health around the clock.

Non-emergency behavioral health services can be accessed by calling Entry & Referral Services at 703-383-8500 during business hours or visiting the Sharon Bulova Center for Community Health. Services are offered in English and Spanish, with interpreters available for other languages.

The Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board (CSB) provides various services for children, youth, and families dealing with mental health concerns and substance use disorders. These services include counseling, psychiatric evaluations, medication management, parenting groups, peer support, crisis response, and recovery supports.

Free online mental health screenings are available for those unsure if they need help. Immediate stress mitigation mechanisms such as self-care activities and fostering positive communication are recommended alongside long-term strategies like engaging in physical activity and setting boundaries.

Several events are scheduled throughout May to promote mental health awareness:

1. Question, Persuade and Refer Suicide Prevention Training offers free online classes designed to recognize suicide warning signs.
2. “Talk. They Hear You.” is a national campaign presentation focusing on underage drinking and substance use prevention.
3. Opioid Overdose and Naloxone Education Training teaches individuals how to respond to overdose situations.
4. Understanding Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Training highlights the effects of trauma on well-being.
5. A Children’s Mental Health Awareness Community Celebration will take place on May 10 at Fairfax Corner.
6. A webinar titled “Dealing with Uncertainty and Stress in Changing Times” will be held by the Suicide Prevention Alliance of Northern Virginia.
