September is recognized as National Preparedness Month, an initiative that encourages communities nationwide to focus on emergency readiness. The observance was established in remembrance of the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and aims to help Americans prepare for potential future threats.

The theme for this year, “Preparedness Starts at Home,” emphasizes the importance of individual and family preparedness. Ashley Shifflett, a training and exercise specialist with the Department of Emergency Management and Security, discussed the significance of home preparedness during a recent episode of the County Conversation podcast.

Shifflett explained why being prepared at home is crucial in ensuring safety during emergencies. She provided guidance on steps households can take to be ready for various situations.
