Reston Community Center’s Diva Central Dress Drive and Shopping Event is helping students prepare for prom by providing donated dresses, shoes, and accessories, according to a Mar. 9 announcement. The event aims to ease the financial burden that can come with attending prom.

The initiative has been running for 24 years and is designed to support students and families who may find the costs of prom attire challenging. By offering free clothing and accessories, the program seeks to ensure that all students have the opportunity to enjoy their special night without added stress.

LaTanja Snelling, equity partnerships director at Reston Community Center, discussed the impact of the event on a recent episode of the County Conversation podcast. She said that the annual drive makes a difference in the lives of young people across the region.

Prom night is often seen as an important milestone for high school students. However, expenses related to formal wear can be prohibitive for some families. The Diva Central Dress Drive addresses this issue by collecting donations from community members and distributing them during a dedicated shopping event.

As Reston Community Center continues its efforts, organizers hope that more students will be able to participate in prom festivities without worrying about costs.
