Reston property tax rate exceeds US average in fourth quarter of 2025

Reston homeowners paid property taxes equal to 1.1% of their property’s value in the fourth quarter of 2025, a rate more than 1.3 times the national average, BlockShopper.com reports.

The median Reston home sold for $550,000 during the fourth quarter of 2025, based on the 67 homes sold in this period. That year, the median property tax bill was $6,179, which totaled 1.1% of the median taxable home’s value.

The national average effective property tax rate stood at 0.888% in 2024.

Within Fairfax County, Woodburn, Huntington, and Merrifield were the three cities with the highest effective property tax rates.

According to Redfin, U.S. home prices climbed in 2025, with the national median price reaching about $447,000 as of June—a 1.13% increase compared to a year before. Redfin classifies a balanced market as one where seller and buyer counts are within 10% of one another.
