Liliana Alfaro, building supervisor at Robinson Secondary School, has been recognized for her leadership and dedication as National Custodian Appreciation Day approaches on October 2. Principal Tracey Philips described Alfaro’s impact at Robinson, stating, “Liliana’s positive energy and enthusiasm are contagious. She has quickly become an essential part of our school, leading her team (24 custodians) with a smile and a true dedication to supporting students, staff, and our community.”
Previously serving as building supervisor at Falls Church High School, Alfaro was named Outstanding School-Based Operational Employee last year. Principal Ben Nowak commented on her contributions: “Falls Church High School is a better place because of Ms. Alfaro.” He highlighted her leadership, dedication, expertise, and care for both her team and the school community.
During challenging times such as renovations and daily operations at Falls Church High School, Alfaro ensured that the environment remained safe and welcoming. Her efforts included overseeing snow removal during a major storm in January when she and her team cleared about 366 tons of snow from the parking lot—a feat one teacher noted would create a snowball 68 feet in diameter.
Alfaro led a diverse custodial team by fostering teamwork and professionalism. Nowak added: “Her leadership extends far beyond logistical coordination — she genuinely cares for her team, assisting them with personal matters such as navigating healthcare appointments and ensuring their well-being. Her team members know they can rely on her, and that trust translates into a highly motivated and cohesive unit that plays a critical role in the success of our school.”
Peter Lake, assistant principal at Falls Church High School, also praised Alfaro’s abilities: “Beyond her technical expertise, Ms. Alfaro is a highly effective communicator and team leader. She has a knack for building strong relationships with staff, our design and construction team, and the wider community. She is adept at resolving conflicts, motivating her team, and fostering a positive and collaborative work environment.”
Alfaro began working as an acting supervisor in 2018 before holding supervisory roles at Great Falls Elementary School, Poe Middle School, Falls Church High School, and now Robinson Secondary School.
