Nikita Ramakrishnan, an eighth-grade student from Rocky Run Middle School, has advanced to the 100th Scripps National Spelling Bee. She previously won the 2025 Fairfax County Spelling Bee in March by correctly spelling “xanthic,” a word derived from Greek meaning “colored with some tint of yellow.”
Ramakrishnan emphasized that successful spelling requires more than rote memorization. “I used to try and memorize them, but then that became a problem when [the pronouncer] read off the competition word list and I didn’t know the word,” she said. She learned to dissect words using roots, origins, and alternate pronunciations.
The Fairfax County Council PTA (FCCPTA), which sponsors the county’s spelling bee, will support Ramakrishnan at the national level. FCCPTA is Scripps’ official Regional Partner in Fairfax County and Alexandria City.
Ramakrishnan’s journey began in third grade when her school introduced her to spelling bees. She placed in various school and regional competitions over the years. Her persistence paid off this year with a first-place finish at the county level. “Spelling has taught me to persevere and not be defeated by these obstacles,” she said.
Preparing for nationals involves rigorous study sessions of four to six hours daily, supported by her family. Her mother, Poorani Ramachandran, plays a significant role as her “head coach,” while her father provides emotional support. “Whether it’s quizzing her or just being a supportive study buddy, [Poorani] is Nikita’s biggest strength and coach,” said Ramakrishnan’s father.
Despite facing pressure on stage at nationals, Ramakrishnan feels equipped with skills like focus and stress management that she developed through spelling competitions. She noted that these skills will also benefit her as she transitions to Chantilly High School next year.
This opportunity marks Ramakrishnan’s first appearance at the Scripps National Spelling Bee after observing last year’s event from the audience. The competition runs from May 27-29 with live broadcasts on ION.
Ramakrishnan expressed gratitude towards Rocky Run Middle School and FCCPTA for their support throughout her journey.
