Scammers are employing increasingly sophisticated methods to deceive individuals over the phone, according to a recent statement from the Fairfax County Police Department. The tactics include caller ID spoofing, AI-generated voices, and high-pressure strategies designed to extract money and personal information.
The Financial Crimes Unit of the department advises against relying solely on caller ID. Scammers can manipulate it to appear as though they are calling from trusted sources like banks or government agencies. They recommend hanging up if a call seems suspicious and using verified contact numbers to confirm the caller’s identity.
Urgency is often used in scam calls with messages about missed jury duty or taxes owed, intending to incite panic. The unit stresses that legitimate organizations will not demand immediate payment or personal details using threats.
Personal information should never be shared with unverified callers. Scammers might ask for Social Security numbers or banking details while pretending to know some personal details already. It is crucial only to provide sensitive information when initiating a call to a verified number.
Unusual payment requests such as those involving gift cards or cryptocurrency are red flags indicating scams. Legitimate entities do not request payments in these forms.
New technologies allow scammers to clone voices, making them sound like real people or even loved ones. In such cases, confirming their identity through another means before taking action is advised.
Suspicious calls should be reported to local police departments. In Fairfax County, reports can be made via the non-emergency line at 703-691-2131 or through online resources like Fairfax County Financial Crimes Online Reporting (FiCOR).
Awareness remains the best defense against evolving phone scams. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and skeptical of unexpected calls demanding personal information or payments.
