The School Board convened its regular meeting on May 8, 2025, beginning with the Pledge of Allegiance and a performance by the Carl Sandburg MS Symphonic Band. Proclamations were approved in recognition of Educator Appreciation Week, Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and anniversaries for Freedom Hill Elementary School and Gunston Elementary School.
Nine community members participated in the public session. Student Representative Megan Sawant presented matters relevant to students.
Key actions included approving amendments to the Student Rights and Responsibilities regulation for the 2025-2026 school year. Notable changes involve adding “dispositions” to monitoring regulations for discipline cases and restricting cell phone use during school hours. The board also directed the Superintendent to develop guidelines regarding responsibility for personal electronic devices on school property.
An intergovernmental contract was awarded to Alexandria City School Board for professional development services aimed at supporting multilingual learners.
Superintendent Reid delivered a report on Executive Limitation-3, focusing on relationships with families and community stakeholders. The board found compliance with this limitation and approved maintaining it as outlined in their Strategic Governance Manual.
Dr. Reid also presented adjustments to the proposed FY 2026 Approved Budget necessary for balancing purposes, along with Academic Matters concerning Classroom on Wheels.
The consent agenda included adopting minutes from an April meeting, several educational plans, nominations for awards, grant funding acknowledgments, and contract awards.
Reports were given by Ms. Meren on state legislation, Mr. McElveen on audit matters, Ms. Lady on governance issues, and Dr. Reid addressed superintendent matters before adjourning at 11:24 p.m.
Upcoming meetings include various committee sessions throughout May leading up to another regular meeting scheduled for May 22.
