Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam issued an emergency curfew for Arlington and Alexandria following the attack at the U.S. Capitol today.

Northam also issued a state of emergency for the state after the attack.

“At the request of @AlexandriaVAGov and @ArlingtonVA, I am declaring a 6PM to 6AM curfew in these jurisdictions, with limited exceptions,” Northam tweeted. “I am also issuing a State of Emergency in Virginia, so we can continue to respond.”

Several Virginians thanked Northam for the decision.

“Thank you,” one user replied. “My husband works in a restaurant here in NoVA and I’m worried these terrorists will try to eat there. And who knows what they could pull. I knew there was a reason I voted for you.”

One user questioned why the local governments weren’t outraged when looting and rioting happened over the summer.

“The people that were fine with the looting & riots in many cities across the country for years are now outraged at what is happening at the Capitol,” the user tweeted. “I am not kidding.”

Others were frustrated that the curfew was set in place so quickly, some saying they needed to go to the store or they still needed to walk their dogs.

One user was upset there was a state of emergency being issued at all.

“State of Emergency in Virginia? On what grounds?” the user tweeted. “Nothing happening here. If ppl have to leave DC by 6, & NOVA is 6....where are they supposed to go? Logic.”

One questioned why Alexandria was included in the curfew, saying that it was a complete overreaction. Another responded that it was because protesters were staying in both Arlington and Alexandria hotels and that it wasn’t an overreaction.

“My issue is there was only 28 minutes notice & general lack of planning & foresight by the Alexandria & Arlington (not even touching lack of planning in DC),” the user said. “I urgently needed medicine & pharmacy closed at 6pm. Did it really need to start at 6pm when curfew started at 6pm in DC.”
